What is a Smooth Collie?
_
A smooth collie is Lassie in a gazelle suit. She can cover your back yard in two graceful bounds and not even be warmed up. She’ll design her own agility track and run the pattern tirelessly, changing the course when she gets bored or dizzy from the tight turns.
She’s your best friend. She’ll follow you everywhere with that quizzical “What are we going to do now?” look. She’s so excited just to be with you that you’ll probably call her “wiggle butt” due to her inability to contain her enthusiasm for your every word or glance.
A smooth collie is 65-pounds of solid muscle that feels like 85. Get out of her way when she runs toward you, because some of her displays of affection feel like getting hit with a piano bench. She has no idea how strong and solid she is. She thinks she is the same as her brothers and sisters with the long fluffy hair – you know, the ones that place their soft feet on your shoulders so gently that you barely feel their touch?
Is she a good watch dog? Oh, yes! She never misses a thing. And you will be the first to know if anything she perceives as dangerous comes near your property. Her sleek and intimidating athletic physique is enough to ward off any intruders, who probably won’t know what kind of dog is staring them down and won’t want to find out.
Is a smooth collie a good choice for kids? That depends. She is just as sweet and protective as her long-haired siblings. She loves children and will never tire of their games. The biggest consideration is whether or not she will knock over very small children in her enthusiasm to join in their play.
The smooth’s short coat is much easier to groom, and it certainly dries faster when she decides to take a dip in the pond or stomp through the puddles after a rain. She will shed twice a year just like her rough-coated litter mates. She just sheds shorter hair. Don’t shave her in the summer, because her coat insulates her from the sun as well as from the winter winds.
If you choose a smooth collie, don’t think that walks in the park are exercise. Your smoothie needs a five-hundred-foot runway to get off the ground. An hour or two off lead at the dog park several times a week will keep her much more fit in body and spirit, if you don’t have acreage for her to stretch out on. She will be a good jogging partner, high-stepping proudly by your side like the princess that she is, and she will be very excited to join you on a hike or family outing.
Your smooth collie will excel in agility, and it’s a fun sport for the dog and her people. I’m sure she would be amazing at search and rescue, too, because she is tireless, extremely focused, and agile as a cat.
What is a smooth collie? She is the log at the end of your bed and your partner for life.
