WHY COLLIES?

Picture
_ Because of Beau, our Collie/Pyranese? mix, who motivated us to help other homeless collies.  When we adopted Beau from the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center, we had no idea he would become an inspiration. He was such a wonderful family dog that we began researching this sweet, gentle breed. We realized that all breeds have individuals who fall on hard times, and so there is a need for Breed Rescues to work with every breed of dog. Eventually, we knew we had to reach out to help other Collies in need like Beau.  We lost Beau in early 2005 after a year-long fight with oral cancer.  He is greatly missed.

Our favorite trait of Collies (possibly due to their heritage as protectors of the flock) is their tendency to love everyone in a family. This trait helps them adapt to new homes, usually very quickly and easily. They are both gentle and protective, making many of them excellent dogs for children - although we must caution you - they are not "Lassie", and, like all dogs, should never be left unattended with small children.  Collies need to feel that they are one of the family, and will worm their way into the heart of even the toughest "no dogs in the house!" person in your home!

Official Purpose and Mission:

The organization was formed in January 1998, as a not-for-profit Florida corporation with the following purpose:

THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

In furtherance of this purpose, but not in limitation thereof, Collie Rescue of Tallahassee shall:

A. Provide humane care for dogs that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or otherwise made homeless, and seek to place these dogs into humane, permanent homes;

B. Promote humane treatment of animals;

C. Participate in activities and programs to further public awareness of the plight of homeless animals;

D. Promote responsible, humane pet ownership through the support and promotion of sterilization programs, tagging and microchip programs, obedience training, pet health and nutrition, and any other programs that promote long and healthy lives for domestic pets;

E. Promote public awareness of the contributions of domestic animals to the welfare of their human companions through support of or participation in pet therapy programs, service dog programs, and programs which seek to identify possible child abuse where animal cruelty is observed.

What is the charge for adoption?

Unfortunately, rehabilitating abandoned animals is not cheap, and although our veterinarians are generous with their expertise, and our volunteers are generous with their time, we could not continue our work without private support.  We are able to do some fundraising, but our time away from the Collies is limited.  Our average expenses per dog totals over $250 by the time they are ready to adopt.  Therefore, our standard adoption charges are:

·            Young and Adult Dogs: $250

·           Seniors (9 years and older): $100

These charges reflect the fact that we expect adopters to have more immediate expenses when they adopt an older dog.  Seniors typically have higher medical bills than younger dogs.  All our dogs are offered for adoption free from internal and external parasites, spayed or neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, current on vaccinations (for their age), and with all known or suspected medical conditions disclosed to the adopter.

Tallahassee Collie Rescue is almost completed funded by donations (See "How are you funded?" below). Since Collie Rescue of Tallahassee is a recognized public charity, all but $50 of your adoption donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

How are we funded?

Tallahassee Collie Rescue, Inc. does not receive regular donations or support from any national animal welfare organizations or breed or kennel clubs. Nor is the organization wholly supported by adoption fees, but rather must rely on the cooperation and generosity of volunteers, local veterinarians, and the general public.

Tallahassee Collie Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization for tax purposes, and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 509(a)(2) Foundation (publicly supported) organization since January 1, 1998.   Therefore, donations to Tallahassee Collie Rescue, Inc. are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
